Omnivores Delimma

Reading a book lent to me by my buddy, called "Omnivores Delimma". It presents modern day agriculture/economics and how shapes the way we eat.

Lots of interesting tidbits in there:
  • Current economic incentives encourage farmers to sell corn at cheaper cost than it takes to make it (subsidies, no incentive to hold on to corn, when there are excesses).
  • Artificially cheap corn encourages use in other markets, and its become pervasive in our markets.
  • Modern day industrial chemicals make it possible to grow corn, with minimal/no crop rotation.
  • ~80% of fuel used to raise corn is used in processing/transporting.
  • If you use the corn to feed an animal, you get ~10% return.
  • Cows aren't really made to eat corn, and for the most part, feeding cow corn would kill them over the long haul.
  • Organic food today, is still industrialized. Meat/Food is largely treated the same way, just no antibiotics.
  • True micro-farmed food can be extremely efficient. Animals on a well run micro-farm, are very healthy, happy.
  • Consider buying food locally when possible.
  • Consider growing your own food.
